One room past ninety while the rest of the house is fine
A garage that got finished after the fact, an apartment over the garage, a commercial space that was never built with ducts in mind: none of it belongs to the main system, so the main system can't fix it. A ductless mini split gives that space its own outdoor compressor and its own wall-mounted indoor air handler, with no ductwork run between them. One outdoor unit can carry up to four indoor handlers, and each one answers to its own thermostat, so you're paying to condition the room somebody's actually using and nothing else.
When the fix is zoning instead of a second system
If the house already has ductwork and the problem is just that the bedroom over the garage and the room over the kitchen never want to be the same temperature at the same time, zone control is usually the answer. Electronically controlled dampers sit inside the existing ducts and open or close like valves, and a thermostat assigned to each zone tells them what to do. Which one applies comes down to how the ductwork actually runs, and that's what the diagnostic on site is for.

Ductless mini split
No ducts required. An outdoor compressor and a wall-mounted indoor handler, installed as their own system for a room addition, a garage, a small apartment or a commercial space. Up to four indoor units can run off one outdoor unit, each with its own thermostat.
Zone control
Works inside the ductwork already in the house. Electronically controlled dampers act like valves in the ducts, and a thermostat per zone tells each one to open or close, so different rooms can sit at different temperatures off the same system.
Fixed, then fixed for good
